# Roadmap

What we are building now, what we are planning next, and the major platform milestones already behind us.

OE Commerce is developed continuously. Smaller improvements ship every month and are listed in the [Release Notes](/release-notes.md). This page covers the larger pieces of work.

{% hint style="info" %}
This roadmap describes our current intentions and is shared to help you plan. It is not a commitment to deliver any particular feature by any particular date, and priorities can change as we learn more from merchants. We do not publish target dates for work that has not started.
{% endhint %}

## In development now

Work that is actively being built. Each will be announced in the Release Notes as it becomes available.

### [Liquid themes and the visual content editor](/commerce/roadmap/from-static-templates-to-liquid-themes.md)

The biggest piece of work currently underway. It replaces fixed templates with Liquid themes, so the look of your storefront becomes something you control rather than something that needs a developer. It brings together the theming engine, a new visual content editor, a new theme editor and a new code editor.

### [Headless APIs and developer tooling](/commerce/roadmap/headless-apis-and-developer-tooling.md)

An administration API covering the platform, so you can connect your own systems, build a custom storefront, or automate work that is manual today. Includes self-service API keys, client libraries and a toolkit for AI agents.

### PostgreSQL

We are moving the platform onto PostgreSQL, alongside continued support for existing databases. This is behind-the-scenes work with no change to how you use your store, and it improves query performance as catalogues and order volumes grow. Rollout is underway, and the first performance gains shipped in September 2026.

## Planned next

Work we intend to take on, roughly in order of priority. These are not yet in development.

| Area | What it would give you |
| -------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Returns and refunds** | A proper returns process in the back office, rather than handling returns manually. |
| **Customer subscriptions** | Recurring billing for your customers, with a self-service portal, flexible intervals and automatic retries on failed payments. |
| **Agent checkout** | Letting AI assistants complete a purchase on your storefront, not just discover your products. Your catalogue is already readable by agents; this adds the ability to buy. |
| **Multi-channel selling** | Listing your catalogue on marketplaces and social channels from one place. |
| **Point of Sale** | Selling in person against the same catalogue, stock and customer records as your online store. |
| **Multi-currency and international** | Selling in more than one currency, with country-appropriate tax handling. |
| **App and theme marketplace** | A place to find and install apps and themes, building on the app framework already in the platform. |
| **Loyalty and rewards** | A loyalty programme built on the wallets and vouchers you already have. |
| **Carrier rate comparison and labels** | Comparing rates across couriers and printing labels from the back office. |
| **Marketing automation** | Campaigns and customer journeys, including SMS and WhatsApp, alongside the transactional email the platform sends today. |
| **Accessibility** | Continued work towards WCAG conformance across the storefront. |

## Delivered milestones

Major platform upgrades already in place and running. Month-by-month detail for everything else is in the [Release Notes](/release-notes.md).

* [Commerce Platform Upgrade - .NET 10](/commerce/roadmap/commerce-platform-upgrade-.net-10.md) - delivered June 2026. The core framework was upgraded to .NET 10, following the earlier move off .NET 4.7.
* [From SQL to Solr - A Smarter Search Experience](/commerce/roadmap/from-sql-to-solr-a-smarter-search-experience.md) - delivered May 2025. Product search moved to a purpose-built search engine, bringing suggested search and results without page reloads.
