# Product Families

A product family groups products that are variations of the same thing, differing by characteristics such as size, colour or material. Rather than listing every combination as a separate product, you define the dimensions that vary and the store presents them as options on one product page.

For example, a t-shirt family might have a Colour dimension and a Size dimension, so a customer picks red and large on a single page instead of you maintaining a product for every combination.

### Understanding Dimensions and Values

* A **dimension** is the thing that varies, such as Colour or Size.
* A **value** is one option within that dimension, such as Red or Large.
* The **metadata** is what the customer sees on the storefront for that value.

### Adding a Product Family

1. Click on Catalogue > Product Families
2. Click on the Create button
3. Give your product family a name and click Create
4. Click the Add New Dimension button
5. Give the dimension a name, such as Colour
6. Select a type from the dropdown
7. Add a new value
8. Enter the value itself, which is the group it represents
9. Enter the metadata, which is what the customer will see on the storefront
10. Repeat steps 4 to 9 for each further dimension, such as Size
11. Once you have added all your dimensions, click Save Changes

{% hint style="info" %}
Plan your dimensions before you start. Adding a dimension later means revisiting every product already using the family, so it is worth getting Colour and Size right first time.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Each combination of values is a separate variant, so dimensions multiply quickly. Three colours and four sizes is twelve variants, each needing its own stock and pricing.
