# Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools, now called Google Search Console, shows you how Google sees your store. It reports which of your pages are indexed, what customers searched for before finding you, and any problems stopping your pages appearing in results.

To use it, Google needs to confirm you own the store. That is done by adding a verification code here.

### Before You Start

Add your store in Google Search Console and choose the HTML tag verification method. Google will give you a verification code to paste in below.

### How to Add Google Webmaster Tools

1. Add your store in Google Search Console and copy the verification code it gives you
2. Select the store you wish to add the code to
3. Click on Manage Store Settings underneath Settings
4. Open Marketing & Growth
5. Open the Google Webmaster Tools section
6. Enter your verification code
7. Save your changes
8. Return to Search Console and click Verify

Once verified, submit your sitemap in Search Console so Google knows which pages to crawl. Your store generates one automatically; see [Sitemap.xml](/features/stores/store-settings/marketing-and-growth/sitemap.xml.md).

{% hint style="warning" %}
Leave the verification code in place after verifying. Removing it causes Google to lose verification and you will need to verify again.
{% endhint %}
