# Password lock

The password lock keeps your storefront closed to the public behind a single password. Merchants use it while a store is still being built, or to run a store that only invited customers may see.

Anyone reaching your store is shown a lock screen and must enter the password before they can browse. This section is where you set the message shown on that screen.

### Settings

* **Message** - the wording shown on the lock screen. Use it to explain why the store is closed and, if appropriate, how to request access.

### How to Update the Password Lock Message

1. Select the store you wish to update
2. Click on Manage Store Settings underneath Settings
3. Open Security & Privacy
4. Open the Password lock section
5. Enter the message you wish to display
6. Save your changes
7. Open your storefront in a private browsing window to see the lock screen as a visitor would

{% hint style="warning" %}
A password lock hides your store from search engines as well as from customers. Remember to switch it off when you go live, or your store will not be indexed.
{% endhint %}

If you want to hide only your prices rather than the whole store, see [Catalogue privacy](/features/stores/store-settings/security-and-privacy/catalogue-privacy.md) instead.
